The Catawba College community and the town of Statesville are in mourning following a catastrophic head-on collision on Amity Hill Road that claimed the lives of two promising young people, Fletcher Mark Daniel Harris, 20, and Skylar Nichole Provenza, 19.

According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, the accident occurred late Friday night, January 16, 2026, when a Chevy Silverado driven by 37-year-old Juan Alvarado Aguilar crossed the center line and struck the couple’s Honda Accord head-on. Aguilar has since been charged with two counts of felony death by vehicle and driving while impaired (DWI).

Fletcher Harris was a dedicated student-athlete, serving as a goalkeeper for the Catawba College men's soccer team and earning consistent recognition on the Presidential Honor Roll and Dean's List.
