After Years of Waiting, Iredell County Jury Finds Worth Smith Not Guilty of Armed RobberyStatesville, N.C.

After living under the weight of a serious felony accusation for approximately 2 and a half years, Worth Smith, 73, has been found Not Guilty by an Iredell County jury on a charge of Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon.

The verdict came after a multi-day jury trial in Iredell County Superior Court, where attorneys with Hall & Dixon, PLLC argued that the State’s evidence failed to prove the charge beyond a reasonable doubt. The case stemmed from a disagreement during a home remodeling project at Mr. Smith’s residence.

The project had been underway for months and involved renovations to accommodate Mr. Smith’s mother, who suffered from dementia and lived in his home under his care.

According to the evidence presented at trial, the project experienced delays, incorrect materials, and ongoing disputes long before the events that ultimately led to criminal charges.

Throughout the proceedings, the defense maintained that the State’s evidence failed to present the complete story and urged jurors to consider the full context surrounding the encounter rather than focusing solely on the final moments of a months-long project. After hearing testimony from numerous witnesses and reviewing the evidence, the jury returned a verdict of Not Guilty, ending a prosecution that had remained pending for years.

Attorney Ronard Dixon, Jr. said the verdict reflects the importance of the constitutional protections afforded to every person accused of a crime.

“Mr. Smith never lost faith in the justice system, even after waiting years for the opportunity to present his case to a jury. Our Constitution guarantees every person the presumption of innocence and requires the State to prove every element of a criminal charge beyond a reasonable doubt. We appreciate the jury’s careful attention to the evidence and their commitment to applying the law.”

For Mr. Smith, the verdict represents more than the conclusion of a criminal case. It brings an end to years of uncertainty while he continued caring for his mother and living with the consequences of a charge carrying some of the most serious penalties under North Carolina law.

“This case serves as an important reminder that an accusation is not a conviction,” Dixon added. “Our justice system depends on jurors who are willing to listen carefully, examine all of the evidence, and hold the government to its burden of proof. That is exactly what happened here.”
